1928 - Roaring Twenties

Title: 1928 - Roaring Twenties
About: The post-war prosperity of the "Roaring Twenties" created a new consumer culture in the cities of Europe and America, allowing more fortunate people to indulge in various forms of entertainment.
The 1920s were an age of dramatic social and political change. More and more people in Europe and America moved to cities, and the global economy was booming. A new class of people arose, swept along by economic progress and liberalization of social morals into an unfamiliar “consumer society", where leisure time was valued. People spent time engaging with all sorts of entertainment: from music and dancing, theatre, radio and film, to sports and recreation.
Nightclub and cabaret culture were especially emblematic of this new age of freedom and decadence, and performances often contained political ideas or undertones. Berlin was particularly famous for this scene, but in cities across Europe and America - like Paris, London, Los Angeles and New York - new styles of music and dance and expression were being pioneered. People spent big and partied hard, perhaps aware that this Golden Age was temporary and artificial, and the prosperity would not last.
Many were also uncomfortable with this urban and sometimes racy mass culture; and even more were left behind, still trapped in poverty or on the periphery of society. However, for a handful of young people in the big cities, the 1920s were roaring indeed, and while it lasted, the good times rolled.
